Please see this week’s discussion questions below.
1 Timothy 2:11-15 | “Gender Roles within the Church”
1.) The Rule: Women are called to be learners (v. 11).
2.) The Restriction: Women are prohibited from pastoral leadership and certain pastoral activities (v. 12).
3.) The Reason: The rationale for this prohibition is grounded in the created order (v. 13-15).
Discuss this question at the beginning or the end: What in the sermon did you find most helpful, convicting, or encouraging?
Why is the issue of gender so important for the world in which we live?
Why is it a good thing that women are told to “learn” in 1 Timothy 2:11?
Though women are not permitted to teach at the pastoral level, what are other permissible outlets women have for teaching?
Can you name a woman who has profoundly impacted you with her own teaching or her ministry to you? How did she?
What are some examples of ways men and women are equal in worth?
What are some examples of ways men and women are different in their functions?
Many people spend a lot of time talking about what women can’t do, but what are some of the activities—even within the context of a church—that women can and should do?
How must we be careful to not take the doctrine of complementarianism (i.e., that men and women have different but complementary roles) too far?
